John Buxton is recorded in various jobs, and was for many years employed by the Great Northern Railway as a barge pilot, taking boats across the River Trent between the Nottingham Canal and the Grantham Canal. He lived on an old barge just downstream of Trent Bridge, and was drowned when the boat sank overnight.
